Along with Charles and Ray Eames and George Nelson, Alexander Girard was one of the prominent figures of postwar American design. Girard mainly focused on textile design, but he was also praised for his graphic work and his furniture, exhibition and interior design. Girard added a hint of playfulness to the design of the twentieth century – something lacking in the strict aesthetics of classical modernism.
